For 50 years, Sam Kornblau has been in the real estate business, building single-family homes, shopping centers and apartment communities in Virginia and North Carolina. He is a principal in Markel|Eagle Partners. He was the founder and Chairman of Realty Industries, Inc., a publicly traded firm, elements of which later merged with United Dominion Realty Trust, a large public apartment REIT. He also served on UDR’s board for eight years and was chairman for seven years. Kornblau currently is chairman of SAMCO Development Corporation, member of the board of directors of Eagle Construction of VA, member of the board of directors of The Wilton Companies and former treasurer of the Henrico Economic Development Authority. Kornblau also has served as chairman of the Virginia Housing Development Authority and on the board of several area banks. In 2006, through a founding donation, he established the Kornblau Institute at the Virginia Commonwealth University Business School in Richmond, Va., which focuses on research broadly related to commercial and residential real estate. The issues dealt with by the Kornblau Institute often benefit from an interdisciplinary approach and include such concerns as land use, housing and commercial development, as well as the social, cultural and economic sides of the real estate industry.
